Trifle Dish: Orange Peel

 
To make LAYER 2, use layer cakes and yardage to create a two-color version. One layer cake will make one block. Alternatively, use charm squares to create a scrappy version.

For EACH Orange Peel block, you will need:
Fabric 1/Background: 4 – 5″ squares
Fabric 2/Peels: 4 – 5″ squares

You will also need:
Applique thread (hand or machine)
Applique needles (for hand applique)
Basting glue
Template plastic

Suggested precuts: fat quarters, layer cake, charm pack

This block can be made using machine or hand applique techniques. 

1. Create template pieces for the orange peels. See Printer Friendly Version at the end of this post to download the orange peel template file. Cut out a total of 32 orange peels for the row.

Tip: Be sure to label your template with permanent marker so you can use them again in another project.

2. Cut out background fabric. You will need 4 squares for each block, cut them to 5″ to allow yourself some wiggle room for the applique.

3. Applique one orange peel to each 5″ square, using the applique template as a placement guide. Use your preferred method of applique. Make a total of 32 orange peel blocks. Trim to 4½” square.

4. Join 4 orange peel blocks together to make one complete block. The unfinished block should measure 8½” square.

4. Join 8 blocks to form Layer 2.

Trifle Dish: Cherry Spools and Lady Fingers

 
To make LAYER 1, use fat eighths to create a two-color version. Two fat eighths will yield two blocks. Alternatively, use a variety of precuts to create a scrappy version.

For EACH Cherry Spool block, you will need:
Fabric 1/Spool:

• (2) 2½” squares 
• (2) 2″ x 8″ strips

Fabric 2/Leaves:

• (6) 2½” squares

Fabric 3/Cherries:

• (4) 2″ squares

Fabric 4/Background:

• (8) 2½” squares
• (2 ) 2″ x 8″ strips
• (9) 2″ squares

You will need (6) 2½” x 11½” strips for sashing between blocks (Lady Fingers)

Finished block measures 11″ square

Tip: use a mix of low value prints for the background if desired

Suggested precuts for scrappy version: fat quarters, layer cake, charm pack

 
1. Create half square triangle (HST) units

• Draw a line on the wrong side of each 2½” background square. 
• Pair each 2½” background square with spool squares and leaf squares (a total of 8 pairs of background fabric + print), right sides together. 
• Lining up the edge of your foot with the pencil line, sew a scant ¼” seam on each side of the line. 
• Cut on the pencil line and press to the darker fabric. 
• Square up each HST to 2″.

  Make 12 sets of background/leaves HSTs and 4 sets of background/spool HSTs per block.

2. Lay out your block pieces for the center as shown.

Piece together in rows.

Add background side strips and spool top and bottom. Press well.

3. Repeat step 2 to make 4 more blocks (5 total).

4. Join 5 blocks and 6 lady fingers together to form Layer 1.

Story Book Star Baby Quilt

 Hey y’all!  This is my first tutorial with Moda Bake Shop, so if you don’t know me yet, I’m Kristan Kremer from Doodle Do Designs.  Pleased to meet you!

I’m going to share a fun and fast baby quilt pattern with you today.  One super-sized block in the center of the quilt makes for a quick but impressive gift for that new little bundle in your life.  Here’s what you’ll need to make this sweet baby quilt.

1 charm pack (I used Story Book by Kate & Birdie Paper Co.) – Note: you only need 36 charms from the pack

1/3 yard fabric for the center star points (I used the tossed birds print from Story Book)
1/4 yard contrast border fabric (I used Bella Solids Sunshine)
7/8 yard background fabric (I used Bella Solids Bleached White) 
1 1/4 yard backing fabric (I used the pirates and planes print from Story Book)
3/8 yard binding (I used the aqua stars print from Story Book)
1 package of crib sized batting
Disappearing ink pen

Use a 1/4 inch seam throughout
RST = Right Sides Together
WOF = Width of Fabric
HST = Half Square Triangles

• Pick out 4 charms from your charm pack for the center of the star.

• Pick out 32 charms from your charm pack for the outer borders, and set aside.
• Note: Put the rest of your charms back in your stash for another project, or use them to make a scrappy pieced back for this quilt.

Cutting

• From your star points fabric, cut (2) 10″ squares.
• From your background fabric, cut:
• (1) 9″ x WOF, then subcut into (4) 9″ squares
• (1)10″ x WOF, then subcut into (2) 10″ squares
• (2) 2 3/4″ x 27 1/2″
• (2) 2 3/4″ x 32″
• From your contrast border fabric, cut:
• (2) 1 1/4″ x 26″
• (2) 1 1/4″ x 27 1/2″

Assembling the quilt top

• Sew the 4 charms you chose for your star center into a four patch, and trim to measure 9″ square.  Set aside.

• Using your 10″ squares, place one background fabric and one star point fabric RST.  Draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner on the back of one of the squares.  Make two sets.  Sew a 1/4″ away from the seam on each side of this line for both sets.  Cut on the line to make four sets of HST blocks.  Press the seams toward the darker fabric.

• Place two HST blocks RST.  Draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner on the back of one of the squares.  Sew a 1/4″ away from the seam on each side of this line.  Cut on the line.  Press the seams open.  Trim to 9″ square.  Repeat for the second set.  You should now have four hourglass blocks.

• Using your four patch, four 9″ squares of background fabric, and four hourglass blocks, arrange in a nine patch as pictured.

• Sew the units making up each row together, press seams to alternating sides.  Then sew the rows together, nesting your seams.  Press seams open.

• Sew a 1 1/4″ x 26″ contrast border strip to each side of your large center star.  Press seams toward the darker fabric.  Sew a 1 1/4″ x 27 1/2″ contrast border strip to the top and bottom of your large center star.  Press seams toward the darker fabric.

• Sew a  2 3/4″ x 27 1/2″ background border strip to each side of your large center star.  Press seams toward the darker fabric.  Sew a 2 3/4″ x 31 1/2″ background border strip to the top and bottom of your large center star.  Press seams toward the darker fabric.

• Using the 32 charms you set aside earlier, sew together in 2 rows each of 7 charms and 2 rows each of 9 charms.  Press seams to one side.

• Sew a 7 charm unit to each side of the quilt.  Press seams toward the charm border.  Sew a 9 charm unit to the top and bottom of the quilt.  Press seams toward the charm border.

• Your quilt top is all finished!  Now just give it a good press, make a quilt sandwich with your batting and backing, and then quilt and bind as desired.  I prefer to use machine binding with baby quilts since they will be getting lots of love and washing.

Twists and Turns

Hello fellow bakers 🙂  I’m Melissa Corry from Happy Quilting and I am super excited to share a new quilt with you today.  Twists and Turns is a super easy quilt that is made from one block but has endless layout possibilities.  So whether you are into a modern square, an improv maze, or a traditional braid, you are sure to find the quilt design that fits you 😉  So, let’s get right to it 🙂

To make a Twists and Turns 84″x 84″ picnic size quilt you will need:

2 Bluebird Park Jelly Rolls by Kate and Birdie
2 1/6 Yards of the Grey Flower print  (13106 18)
1 1/6 Yards of the Yellow print  (13108 19)
5 Yards of any print for Backing

STEP 1 – CUTTING

We will start with the Yardage.  From the Grey print yardage, cut (30) 2 1/2″ x WOF strips.  From those strips sub-cut (36) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ squares, (36) 2 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ strips, and (36) 2 1/2″ x 14 1/2″ strips.  Set aside.  From the Yellow print yardage, cut (15) 2 1/2″  x WOF strips.  From those strips sub-cut *36) 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ strips and (36) 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ strips.  Set Aside.

Now it’s time to move onto the jelly rolls.  From the 2 Jelly Rolls select 54 strips.  I used the light grey, green, blue, and coral strips setting aside the yellow and dark grey strips for binding.

Divide the 54 strips into 2 piles, one pile of 18 strips and one pile of 36 strips.  Evenly distribute the colors in each pile.

From the pile of 18 strips, cut each strip while folded into a 10 1/2″ and (2) 4 1/2″ increments.  This will create (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles and (2) 2 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ strips from each strip.  Cut all 18 strips this way and group the pieces into piles of similar size.

From the pile of 36 strips, open the strip and cut one of each of the following pieces from the strip.  A 2 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ piece, a 2 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ piece, a 2 1/2″ x  8 1/2″ piece, a 2 1/2″ x  6 1/2″ piece, and a 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ square.  Cut each of these pieces from all 36 strips.  Group these with the other prints into piles of similar size.

From your Jelly Rolls you should now have the following pieces

STEP 2 – BUILDING BLOCK

To start the block, gather a grey yardage 2 1/2″ square and a colored print 2 1/2″ square.  Place with right sides together and stitch a 1/4″ seam along the edge, aligning as you sew.

Chain stitch 36 similar sets.  Chain stitching is just sewing one set after another without clipping threads in between.  Once you are through sewing all 36 sets, clip the threads and press toward the colored print.

Now, layout your pieced set and a colored print 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle as shown.  Place the rectangle onto the pieced set with right sides together and aligning the raw edge.  Stitch a 1/4″ seam along the edge.

Repeat for all 36 pieced sets chain stitching as you go.  Once you have chain stitched all 36 sets, clip the threads and press towards the 4 1/2″ print piece.

And now the process will repeat again and again 🙂

Grab a colored print 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle and place it onto the side of the pieced unit with right sides together and aligning raw edges as shown.  Stitch a 1/4″ seam along the edge.  Repeat for all 36 sets chain stitching as you go.  Clip the threads and press towards the newly added piece.  

 Now, grab a colored print 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangle and place it onto the top of the pieced unit with right sides together and aligning raw edges as shown.  Stitch a 1/4″ seam along the edge.  Repeat for all 36 sets chain stitching as you go.  Clip the threads and press towards the newly added piece.

Grab a yellow yardage 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangle and place it onto the side of the pieced unit with right sides together and aligning raw edges as shown.  Stitch a 1/4″ seam along the edge.  Repeat for all 36 sets chain stitching as you go.  Clip the threads and press towards the newly added piece.  

 Now, grab a yellow yardage 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ rectangle and place it onto the top of the pieced unit with right sides together and aligning raw edges as shown.  Stitch a 1/4″ seam along the edge.  Repeat for all 36 sets chain stitching as you go.  Clip the threads and press towards the newly added piece.

Grab a colored print 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ strip and place it onto the side of the pieced unit with right sides together and aligning raw edges as shown.  Stitch a 1/4″ seam along the edge.  Repeat for all 36 sets chain stitching as you go.  Clip the threads and press towards the newly added piece.  

 Now, grab a colored print 2 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ strip and place it onto the top of the pieced unit with right sides together and aligning raw edges as shown.  Stitch a 1/4″ seam along the edge.  Repeat for all 36 sets chain stitching as you go.  Clip the threads and press towards the newly added piece.

Grab a colored print 2 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ strip and place it onto the side of the pieced unit with right sides together and aligning raw edges as shown.  Stitch a 1/4″ seam along the edge.  Repeat for all 36 sets chain stitching as you go.  Clip the threads and press towards the newly added piece.  

 Now, grab a colored print 2 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ strip and place it onto the top of the pieced unit with right sides together and aligning raw edges as shown.  Stitch a 1/4″ seam along the edge.  Repeat for all 36 sets chain stitching as you go.  Clip the threads and press towards the newly added piece.

Almost done!!!

Grab a grey yardage 2 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ strip and place it onto the side of the pieced unit with right sides together and aligning raw edges as shown.  Stitch a 1/4″ seam along the edge.  Repeat for all 36 sets chain stitching as you go.  Clip the threads and press towards the newly added piece.  

 Now, grab a grey yardage 2 1/2″ x 14 1/2″ strip and place it onto the top of the pieced unit with right sides together and aligning raw edges as shown.  Stitch a 1/4″ seam along the edge.  Repeat for all 36 sets chain stitching as you go.  Clip the threads and press towards the newly added piece.

You should now have (36) 14 1/2″ x 14 1/2″ blocks that look something like this 🙂

STEP 3 – ASSEMBLING QUILT TOP


And now is the really fun part.  This is where you get to decide what kind of a quilt layout you want.  There are so many possibilities.  These are a few of my favorite 🙂    Play with the blocks until you have the layout you love, and there are lots more options than shown 😉  Once you have a layout you like, sew the blocks into rows and the rows into the quilt top 🙂

 

If you decide to do the staircase layout, the same as I did, it is easiest to first sew the blocks into the two  sets of two shown below, making 9 of each set.

And then sew the sets into two sets of row, making 3 of each row as shown.

And lastly, sewing the rows into the quilt top.

STEP 4 – FINISHING

Now just Baste it, Quilt it, and Bind It.  I know, I make it sound so easy.  If you are new to finishing your quilt, I have created a video tutorial series that goes over the basics of each of these three steps.  You can find it at my blog 🙂   You will use 8 strips you set aside at the beginning to do the binding.
